What is a Domain Name?

A domain name can be thought of as the “address” for your website. Most domains consist of the primary name, plus a top level domain name extension such as .com, .org, or .net . For example, for Yahoo.com the name is “Yahoo” plus the top level domain name extension of .com.

Picking and Registering a Domain

The most difficult aspect in choosing a domain name is finding a name that you like that is not already in use. The basic rules are simple (maximum length of 63 letters, no special characters such as %, &, *) but most of the obvious and attractive names have already been taken. We recommend that you go to Yahoo Domains Home Page and use their domain availability tool.

Starting July 1, users who have registered domains with Yahoo's small-business site will see their annual fee for the service jump from $9.95 to $34.95.

The news came in form of e-mail for anyone who has registered a domain with Yahoo Small Business, and a Yahoo representative told CNET News.com Friday that the e-mails have been sent 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days before users were set to renew their domain registration.

But some blogs are expressing dismay at the price increase, which is three and a half times what domain owners have paid in past years.

Yahoo said the $25 price increase is primarily being instituted to match the cost of doing business, and that registering domains--the process of creating a new Web address--can cost even more with other Web sites.

However, other competitors have much lower prices, including GoDaddy.com or Google Apps, both of which charge annual fees of around $10.

Since domain registration is not the core of Yahoo's small-business site, the company said its prices can not be as low as those of sites that focus on registering domains.

Low domain registration fees, though, can be a foot in the door to coax customers to upgrade to more profitable services.

According to Yahoo, new domain registrations will still only cost $9.95 and after a year, the fee will go up to $34.95.

that's just straight up insulting. So the vast majority of users don't realize that they can easily switch (I don't use Yahoo's service, however I would imagine the could)... so basically they're going to fource everyone into pay triple what they used to pay when others like godaddy do it for <10$.>

This thing has MelbourneIT's smell all over it! While everyone else has been selling domain registration in the $10 range, MelbourneIT has been charging $35 for year's now. Yahoo and MIT have some kind of partnership, but as I've discovered, zero interoperablity.

$34.95 domains...yeah, how's that workin' out for you Yahoo? Good luck with that.

Yahoo has taken it one step further now. They are preventing domains from being transfered by a clause in their transfer policy. If you less then 60 days from renewal, then you will get charged the $34.95 renewal fee. Other companies allow for a transfer up to the date of renewl, but Yahoo will refuse the transfer so they can force this renewal fee on you.

Here is the catch. Since then did not post the change on their site, the only way you will know of the new price is by the email mentioned in the above article. Well as the article states they sent it out to those renewing in 30, 60, or 90 days. Guess what that means. The 30 and 60 day customers will get charged the $34.95 before their domain can be transfered off.

This is an obsolute outrage! Yahoo! is going to get the pants sued off of them. They didn't give their customers a choice, they changed the price but the customer service department tells you to bad, you still need to pay it. Something fishy is going on here. CNET needs to be an advocate for their loyal readers and contact Yahoo! regaurding this shady practice of not allowing customers to transfer off, and certainly not allowing them enough time.

As a customer of GD, Yahoo, etc ... some people need to take into account.

1) Yahoo has a great support team that does not tell you that you need to hire a programmer etc to solve your problem that is related to their scripting.

2) Many other domain companies and registra's have 1 800 numbers unlike GD
which after a year of asking for support and help and never getting it can cost you the difference between GD price which is not $6.99/1.99/9.95 if you do not have their domain club package which cost $89.99 a year to get the discount rate or you have to be a RESELLER, like you need that headache. Worse still you will have to add other items to get a deal, but believe next year it will all add up to the same price.

34.95 - 9.95 = 25.00

I can show you proof it will cost you more than that at GD over the year in long distant charges for support, etc

oh and so much more
